FORT MYERS, Fla. — Yoan Moncada took a big step toward officially joining the Boston Red Sox.

Moncada, who reportedly agreed to a contract with the Red Sox earlier this week, was spotted at the team’s spring training complex Wednesday. The Cuban prospect stopped by JetBlue Park to take a physical, and he’s expected to continue the signing process this week in Boston.

Red Sox chairman Tom Werner said Wednesday morning that nothing was official with regard to Moncada. It seems inevitable, though, that the 19-year-old soon will join the organization and immediately become the club’s top prospect. Many even have suggested Moncada might have been the first overall pick in the Major League Baseball draft if he was a domestic talent.

“I’m not saying (first overall), but he’d go very early (in the draft),” Werner said. “In a situation like that, we put a lot of weight in the recommendation of our baseball ops people. We felt like we wanted to have depth in our organization, that’s very important to us. This is one way of adding depth.”

Red Sox manager John Farrell said Wednesday afternoon he hadn’t yet met with Moncada, who is expected to begin this season in the minors. But there was plenty of buzz when Moncada arrived at and left JetBlue Park.
