The Boston Red Sox shifted around some pieces before Thursday’s game against the Texas Rangers.

The Red Sox placed outfielder/first baseman Daniel Nava on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to May 26) with a left thumb strain. Boston also optioned right-handed reliever Heath Hembree to Triple-A Pawtucket and designated utility man Jeff Bianchi for assignment.

Left-handed starter Eduardo Rodriguez and left-handed reliever Robbie Ross Jr. were recalled from Pawtucket. Outfielder Carlos Peguero, who was acquired Wednesday from the Rangers, was added to the 25-man roster.

Rodriguez is considered one of the top pitching prospects in the Red Sox organization. The 22-year-old is scheduled to make his major league debut Thursday in a spot-start for Boston, but perhaps he’ll be afforded more opportunities soon with a strong first impression.

There had been some speculation Wednesday after the Red Sox acquired Peguero that they might designate Nava for assignment. Nava is out of minor league options and hasn’t performed well this season. The 32-year-old is hitting .159 with a .440 OPS in 73 plate appearances.

None of the Red Sox’s roster moves Thursday could be considered a major transaction. Boston continues to search for a winning formula, though, and the quest could involve several players coming and going.
