David Blatt Unfazed By Cavs’ Title Drought: ‘I Was A Red Sox Fan’ Growing Up

“God hates Cleveland.”

That’s both the common lament among native Cleveland fans, and the rebuttal for those reminding said fans that Cleveland won’t win.

It’s not just that Cleveland as a city hasn’t won a professional sports championship in 51 years. It’s about the way Cleveland constantly is dealt stomach-punch, gut-wrenching losses.

The Fumble. The Drive. The Shot. The Decision.

All of those incredible sports moments involved Cleveland, and Cleveland lost every single time.

Cavaliers coach David Blatt, whose team just advanced to the NBA Finals with a blowout Game 4 victory over the No. 1-seeded Atlanta Hawks, knows the drill. He won’t take anything for granted along the way.

But his on-court comments weren’t as telling as what he said in his postgame press conference.

Growing up in nearby Framingham, Mass., Blatt didn’t commiserate over “The Shot” or “The Drive;” he grew up with Bucky bleepin’ Dent and Bill Buckner haunting his dreams.

That’s right: The Cavs coach’s source of misery was none other than the Boston Red Sox.

Needless to say, Blatt knows a thing or two about title droughts and the accompanying pain they bring along. That critical intel could help Cleveland in its quest to make history.
