FOXBORO, Mass. — David Ortiz announced Wednesday he will retire following the 2016 MLB season, and Tom Brady, like many Boston Red Sox fans, were upset to hear the news.

“Yeah, a great player, you know, he’s given all of our fans so many reasons to cheer,” Brady said. “So he’s been an incredible player. It’s sad to see him go. I have a lot of respect for him and the way that he’s always brought great leadership to his team. He’s been a great example.”

Ortiz and Brady have been icons in the Boston sports scene for more than a decade. They have combined for seven championships since Brady took over as the New England Patriots’ starting quarterback in 2001. Ortiz signed with the Red Sox before the 2003 season and has hit 445 home runs with 1,403 RBIs while batting .288 with a .951 OPS.

Brady won’t look to join Ortiz in retirement any time soon. The Patriots quarterback has said he thinks he still has 10 more years left in him.
