Alex Rodriguez’s Major League Baseball career will come to an end very soon.
The New York Yankees designated hitter told ESPN’s Andrew Marchand on Wednesday that he’ll retire after the 2017 season, when his current contract expires. Rodriguez signed the 10-year, $275 million contract in 2008.
A-Rod will be 42 at the end of the 2017 season, and he has enjoyed a storied, albeit extremely controversial, career. With 687 career home runs so far (fourth all-time), 2,055 RBIs (fourth all-time), 3,070 hits (21st all-time), 14 All-Star nods, 10 Silver Slugger awards, two Gold Gloves and one World Series championship, Rodriguez’s career certainly is Hall of Fame-worthy. However, people likely will never forget his season-long ban for performance-enhancing drugs in 2014.
But either way, it appears MLB will have another retirement tour once Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz’s ends in 2016.
