Boston Red Sox designated hitter David OrtizWe can try to convince David Ortiz not to retire all we want. But at a certain point, it’s worth just taking a step back and appreciating his latest accomplishments.

The Boston Red Sox slugger is in the middle of an incredible final season. After hisĀ epic 4-for-4 game Sunday, Ortiz enters play Tuesday as Major League Baseball’s leader in OPS (1.092), slugging percentage (.684) and doubles (19). He has the fifth-best batting average in the American League at .329, is second in the AL with 37 RBIs and leads the Red Sox with 11 home runs.

Did we mention he’s 40 years old and (probably) playing in his final big league season?

There’s obviously a lot of baseball to be played, but if Ortiz’s production doesn’t drop off too much, his retirement tour has a legitimate chance of being one of the best final seasons in MLB history.

So, what’s his competition? Check out the link below for a list of the most impressive swan songs in baseball’s modern era, including one byĀ a Red Sox legend you might have heard of.
