NHL Rumors: Jarome Iginla Would Consider Waiving No-Trade Clause

Jarome Iginla is 39 years old and in the final year of his contract with the Colorado Avalanche.

We don’t know if he’ll retire after this season, but if he wants one more chance at winning the Stanley Cup — just about the only thing he hasn’t won in his Hall of Fame-caliber career — the Avs will look to accommodate him.

“The word is that if he does want to go, that the Colorado Avalanche will search the market and see what the options are for Iginla to go somewhere to chase the Cup one more time,” Friedman said during the “Headlines” segment of last Saturday’s “Hockey Night in Canada” broadcast on Sportsnet.

Iginla has struggled this season and even was a healthy scratch for a recent game. He has tallied just seven points (three goals, four assists) in 27 games. His streak of 16 straight non-lockout seasons with 20 or more goals is in danger of ending.

The veteran winger could still be useful for a championship contender as a bottom-six forward or a power-play specialist. But he’s no longer a final-piece-of-the-puzzle kind of trade deadline acquisition.

He might as well look for a trade, too, because Colorado isn’t going to approach the Stanley Cup Final for a long while.
