Miguel Cabrera Had Hilarious Reason For Missing Tigers’ Walk-Off

Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera celebrated his 35th birthday by going 2-for-4 with a home run, two hits, an RBI Wednesday.

But he also missed teammate Dixon Machado’s first home run of the season, which happened to be a walk-off shot to end the game.

The temperature was in the 30’s at Comerica Park and Machado was at the dish in a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Baltimore Orioles. With it being so chilly, Cabrera went into the clubhouse to get some coffee.

“It was different because I was here, inside the clubhouse looking for coffee,” Cabrera told ESPN after the game. “Because it started getting a little bit more cold, so I said, ‘Let’s go out there and drink a little bit of coffee and be ready for the next at-bat.’ But when I got my first drink, my first coffee drink, I see Machado hit a home run, and I was like jumping here in the clubhouse.”

Machado had yet to record a home run this season entering Wednesday’s game. In fact, the second baseman previously only had one homer in his career, so Cabrera likely thought he had a little more time to go into the clubhouse.

Still sounds like his birthday ended on a pretty high note, though.
