Xander Bogaerts Injury: Encouraging Update On Red Sox Shortstop’s Ankle

BOSTON — The Red Sox received less-than-stellar news regarding Xander Bogaerts on Monday, but it appears Boston’s shortstop already is making strides in recovering from an ankle injury.

It was announced Monday that Bogaerts will be placed on the 10-day disabled list after sustaining a small crack in his ankle in Sunday’s win over the Tampa Bay Rays. The injury will not require surgery, but the team expects to be without Bogaerts for up to 14 days.

Prior to Tuesday’s game against the New York Yankees, however, Bogaerts was seen walking in the Red Sox’s clubhouse without a walking boot. The 25-year-old acknowledged that he feels better than he did Sunday and expects to resume baseball activities in the coming days.

In Bogaerts’ absence, it appears the Red Sox will fill the void by committee. Manager Alex Cora said Tuesday he expects Brock Holt, Eduardo Nunez and the recently called-up Tzu-Wei Lin to see time at the position.

Boston should be able to stay the course without Bogaerts in the mix, but the injury puts a halt to his scorching start to the season. Through nine games, he collected a .368 average with two home runs and nine RBI.
