Garrett Richards Injury: Angels Pitcher Reportedly Needs Tommy John Surgery

The Los Angeles Angels have suffered a huge setback to their starting rotation.

Star pitcher Garrett Richards likely will undergo Tommy John surgery because of a right ulnar collateral ligament tear, ending his 2016 season, per Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan, citing a source with knowledge of the situation.

This would be the second major surgery of Richards’ young career. He had season-ending knee surgery in 2014 after suffering an injury against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Richards was 1-3 with a 2.34 ERA and 34 strikeouts over 34 2/3 innings this season. The Angels rank ninth among the 15 American League teams with a 4.45 ERA among starters.

Los Angeles sits in third place in the American League West division with a 13-15 record entering Friday. The Angels are four games behind the first-place Seattle Mariners.
