Jose Iglesias, Ryan Lavarnway, Others Currently Auditioning for Roles With 2013 Red Sox (Podcast)The Red Sox have labored their way into Labor Day.

The Sox entered Monday’s action in the midst of a six-game losing streak, which makes it hard to find positives as the team heads down the stretch. The struggles are particularly difficult for Sox fans when you consider where the team usually is in the standings at this time of year.

Certainly Boston fans would prefer to see their team competing for a division crown, but the blockbuster deal with the Dodgers has given the club a sense of direction. The Red Sox have financial flexibility, which could allow them to make a splash in the offseason, and the last month of the season now gives Ben Cherington and Co. an opportunity to evaluate what they already have in house.

Two players to keep an eye on as the season winds down are Jose Iglesias and Ryan Lavarnway. They’re two of the top prospects in the organization, but each is in a different situation. While Iglesias is known for his glove, Lavarnway is known for his offensive prowess. Yet both have struggled at the dish thus far, so getting more playing time could perhaps allow them to adjust and allow the Red Sox to see how each fits into the 2013 plans.

NESN.com MLB insider Didier Morais caught up with Ricky Doyle on Monday to discuss the Red Sox’ recent woes, the team’s future plans, the Nationals’ decision to shut down Stephen Strasburg and Roger Clemens‘ potential big league comeback.
