World Cup 2010 to Feature 25 3-D Broadcasts Who needs an HDTV anymore? With 3-D broadcasting slowly making its way into the mainstream, sports can be seen as if you're actually on the field of play. This summer, Sony is helping to bring the world's biggest sporting event even closer to viewers all around the world.

According to The Associated Press, the World Cup in South Africa will feature 25 games broadcast in 3-D as well as special viewing events. Both the opening match and the final can be seen in 3-D, as well as 14 other opening-round ties.

If you want to see Landon Donovan, Tim Howard and the rest of the U.S. squad in all their glory, there is only one chance. Even though the matchup with England has been given the biggest billing in the lead-up to the Cup, the United States' only 3-D game will come on June 18 against Slovenia.

While the difference isn't all that noticeable on wide views of the pitch, when the camera goes close up into the fray, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo might as well be running around your living room.

The technology utilizes battery-powered glasses for the private systems as well as the more typical glasses you might see if you went to see Avatar in theaters for larger, cinema-sized screens.

All told, Sony and FIFA expect "a few hundred thousand" people to be able to experience the games in 3-D.
