ESPN will not be airing its famous “Are You Ready For Some Football?” musical open before Monday night’s game due to comments made by singer Hank Williams Jr.
Williams made headlines for comments on Fox News in which he compared President Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler.
“While Hank Williams, Jr. is not an ESPN employee, we recognize that he is closely linked to our company through the open to Monday Night Football,” ESPN said in a statement. “We are extremely disappointed with his comments, and as a result we have decided to pull the open from tonight’s telecast.”
Williams was asked about President Obama, who is a Democrat, playing golf with Speaker of the House John Boehner, who is a Republican.
“That would be like Hitler playing golf with [Benjamin] Netanyahu [the prime minister of Israel],” Williams replied.
The Sports Business Journal reports that the decision to pull the open is only for one game, and the company is “still evaluating” the status of Williams for future games.
