Dustin Pedroia and Andre Ethier are good buddies who go back to their playing days at Arizona State. While they play their big-league ball on opposite sides of the country, the two remain good friends and spend plenty of time together in the offseason.
And like any good friendship, the two like to joke around with each other on occasion, whether it’s riding the rides together at Disney or, as Ethier did on Wednesday, pulling off a prank.
During Pedroia’s weekly radio spot on The Big Show on WEEI, Ethier called in and posed as a fan (named Andrew) wanting to speak to Pedroia. His intent was simple — get under the Red Sox second baseman’s skin. To do so, Ethier suggested that the Red Sox trade Pedroia — just like they did with shortstop Marco Scutaro — saying that the Sox could get by just fine with Nick Punto and Mike Aviles.
Pedroia’s response was, of course, awesome.
“Let me break it down for you, Andrew. I gotta couple of pieces of hardware that say I’m pretty damn good,” he said. “I’m looking to hire someone to come and spray them down for me. Andrew, you gotta job?”
Hear it all below.
