The Brooklyn Nets would really like Deron Williams to be their point guard for the next few years, and they're not hiding it.
Williams' wife, Amy, and children were greeted by the sight of a truck with a billboard wishing Williams a happy birthday outside their home Tuesday morning.
Williams is one of the most sought-after free agents of the offseason after finishing his contract with the then-New Jersey Nets last year. He has said he's narrowed his potential landing spots to the Nets or the Mavericks. Dallas offers Williams the comfort of playing in his home state and having All-Star veteran Jason Kidd backing him up.
Some of the wondering about where Williams will sign also includes what his supporting cast will look like, as Williams has been reticent about sticking with the Nets if Brooklyn does not bolster the rest of its roster. Speculation has been that the Nets may need to sign someone like Dwight Howard to convince Williams they're on the winning track.
Williams spent the first part of his career with the Utah Jazz before being traded to the Nets in 2011 partway through his sixth season. He has averaged 17.6 points and 9.2 assists a game over his career and is a three-time NBA All-Star.
