Carlos Ruiz Suspended 25 Games After Testing Positive for Amphetamine, Possibly Adderall

On Tuesday Major League Baseball suspended Philadelphia Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz for violating the sport’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

Multiple reports have emerged indicating that Ruiz was suspended for testing positive for some sort of amphetamine. Ruiz will only be suspended 25 games — as opposed to 50 — because the penalties for amphetamines are different than those governing the use of steroids, testosterone and HGH.

Additionally, the Philadelphia Inquirer has indicated that Ruiz specifically tested positive for Adderall. Interestingly enough, on Monday, former defensive end for the Jets and Raiders Ryan Riddle indicated that Adderall use (at least in the NFL) isn’t real, and is just a “PR excuse.” Brandon Browner, Jermaine Cunningham, Eric Wright and Richard Sherman have all recently been implicated with the drug in that league.

Regardless, Ruiz won’t be allowed to play in a regular-season game for the Phillies until April 28, and will lose about $750,000 in salary.
