If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em — or, if you’re Bobby Valentine, put on imitation MLB jerseys and laugh along with those who have enjoyed seeing you get fired throughout the years.
Valentine is the star of a new CBS Sports Fantasy Baseball commercial, where he — described on-screen as a “famous baseball manager” — recounts how he’s been fired a lot in his managerial career. Now, however, he can run his own fantasy team without having to be afraid of the hook.
The clip shows him being “fired” by various teams throughout his career — the Texas Rangers, the Chiba Lotte Marines (twice), the New York Mets (in his famous disguise) and finally, the Boston Red Sox. Part of the gag is that people watching can apparently go online and vote whether Bobby should be hired or fired again — presumably from his job of being a pitch man this time.
Valentine gets points for being able to poke fun at himself, but here’s guessing that there’s still a good chunk of people in New England who may be jumping on CBSSports.com for something other than fantasy baseball after they see the commercial.
