Spring training is usually the time for players to knock off the rust and, hopefully, make the majority of their mistakes. This year, even the ball girls got in on the gaffes.
The Philadelphia Phillies and the Tampa Bay Rays were in the top of the sixth at Bright House Field, where the Phillies play their spring games, when Tampa’s designated hitter, Shelley Duncan, hit a ground ball that hopped over third base and then into foul territory in left field. The ball was ruled fair.
However, the Hooters girl obviously thought the ball was foul and stopped it with her glove before walking over and handing it to an excited fan amid a sea of jeers. This is the second time this spring such a mishap has taken place at Bright House Field, so maybe the ball girls should get some spring training in themselves.
