The Philadelphia Eagles have released DeSean Jackson, the team announced Friday.
The transaction comes after NJ.com reported Jackson’s gang affiliations troubled the Eagles. The report found that Jackson is friendly with members of the Crips, and the wide receiver was seen flashing their gang sign during a game last season.
Jackson has posted pictures to his Instagram account with Theron Shakir, a purported member of the gang who was charged with murder in 2010.
There is no evidence Jackson is a member of the Crips, Los Angeles Police detective Eric Crosson told NJ.com.
The Eagles were attempting to trade Jackson this offseason but found no suitors despite reported interest from the New England Patriots, Oakland Raiders and Carolina Panthers, among other teams. The Patriots are not likely to pursue Jackson after former tight end Aaron Hernandez was charged with murder last summer.
UPDATE, 2:08 p.m.: Jackson issued a statement via ESPN saying he’s not in a gang.
