Geno Smith let the relentless home crowd get to him, and now he must pay for it.
The NFL fined the New York Jets quarterback $12,000 on Friday, five days after he shouted a profanity at taunting fans after his team’s loss to the Detroit Lions.
The Jets last in the AFC East with a 1-3 record, and Smith hasn’t done much to help. He has thrown five interceptions against four touchdowns and owns an atrocious passer rating of 75.1 — fourth-worst in the NFL.
Smith was booed regularly during Sunday’s game and was caught by TV cameras yelling “(Expletive) you” to a fan as he walked off the field. Smith apologized after the game, but his actions were enough to warrant a fine from the league.
If Smith is letting fans get to him, that doesn’t bode well for a player who wants to be a star under the bright lights of New York.
