Maryland and Penn State went a long way in developing a little rivalry on Saturday.

The two teams squared off in Happy Valley, their first matchup since Maryland joined the Big 10. If the first showdown was any indication, this is going to be one to watch in the coming years.

Things got a little chippy during pregame. The two clubs eventually got together for a little bit of good-natured pushing and shoving. Not much came of it, though, and it looked like things would end there.

That wasn’t the case, though. When the two teams’ captains met at midfield for the coin toss, Maryland made a loud statement. The Terrapin captains elected not to shake the Nittany Lions’ hands, a gesture that probably didn’t sit well with anyone in blue.

That move cost Maryland, though. The Terps were assessed a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, but you have to think that message was sent.

Maryland got the last laugh, too. They were able to pull out the win with a late field goal, the first time they’ve beat Penn State since 1961. That, more than anything, should spark the rivalry.
