The drama could be trickling down to Jon Lester’s former battery mate.

The Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs are believed to be among the finalists for Lester’s services. The two teams also appear to be among those in the mix for catcher David Ross.

Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington told reporters Tuesday at the Major League Baseball winter meetings in San Diego that Boston still is interested in potentially re-signing Ross to be the club’s backup catcher. The Red Sox’s interest isn’t contingent on whether they land Lester, according to Cherington.

The Red Sox figure to have some competition for Ross’ services, though, and one team that could stand in the way of a potential reunion is Chicago. ESPN.com’s Gordon Edes reports that the Cubs are scheduled to meet with Ross’ agent Tuesday night.

Ross, who turns 38 in March, spent the last two seasons with Boston, emerging as a leader in the clubhouse and earning the respect of his peers. The San Diego Padres, Atlanta Braves and Arizona Diamondbacks also are believed to be interested in the veteran backstop, according to reports.
