After 20 successful — and sometimes controversial — seasons in Major League Baseball, Jason Giambi announced his retirement on Monday.
The 2000 American League MVP played for the Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, Colorado Rockies and Cleveland Indians, hitting 440 home runs with a career .277 average.
The 44-year-old five-time All-Star thanked family and friends for their support throughout his long career at first base in a statement to the New York Daily News.
“I’ve done everything I possibly can in my career,” Giambi said. “From making the big-leagues to superstar to bench player to mentor, I’ve done every role you can possibly do in this game. I have two young ones and I want to get an opportunity to spend that time in their young lives. I want to be there to watch them grow.”
