UPDATE (3:40 p.m. ET): The Dodgers officially named Dave Roberts as their next manager.

Original story: Dave Roberts helped bring one historic franchise a World Series title as a player, and now apparently he will be tasked with doing the same as a manager.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have an agreement in place with Roberts to become the next manager of the club, a source told Dylan Hernandez of The Los Angeles Times.

The Dodgers are expected to hold a press conference a week after Thanksgiving, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.

Roberts, who spent the last two seasons as the San Diego Padres bench coach, is a good choice for the Dodgers. He’s a smart baseball guy who spent 10 seasons in the majors as a player. More than two of those years were spent with the Dodgers.

The former outfielder left the Dodgers in 2004 when he was dealt at the trade deadline to the Boston Red Sox, with whom he won the World Series three months later. Of course, his stolen base in Game 4 of that season’s America League Championship Series was the key play that helped the Sox overcome a 3-0 series deficit and eliminate the New York Yankees.
