FOXBORO, Mass. — The New England Patriots made a surprise practice-squad cut Wednesday morning.
The Patriots terminated the practice-squad contract of rookie running back Trey Williams and signed linebacker Kevin Snyder, multiple sources told NESN.com.
Williams originally was claimed by the Patriots off waivers from the Dallas Cowboys on Dec. 1. He was waived Thursday and added to the Patriots’ practice squad Saturday.
The Patriots are shallow at running back with LeGarrette Blount reportedly headed to season-ending injured reserve. The Patriots have Brandon Bolden and James White on their 53-man roster and Montee Ball and fullback Joey Iosefa left on their practice squad.
Snyder was signed by the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent out of Rutgers in May. He was waived in October and signed to the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad in November before being cut Dec. 1.
Snyder worked out for the Patriots on Tuesday. He ran a 4.58-second 40-yard dash with a 7.09-second three-cone, 4.31-second short shuttle, 35-inch vertical leap and 9-foot, 9-inch broad jump at his pro day in March. He finished his Rutgers career with 229 tackles, 6.5 sacks and 18.5 tackles for loss. He missed two games in 2014 with turf toe.
Snyder joins Ball, Iosefa, wide receivers DeAndre Carter and Chris Harper, offensive linemen Chris Barker, Keavon Milton and Torrian Wilson, cornerback Rashaan Melvin and safety Brock Vereen on the Patriots’ practice squad.
