The Boston Red Sox made a change to their pitching staff Friday, recalling left-hander Roenis Elias from Triple-A Pawtucket and optioning right-hander William Cuevas.
Elias has yet to make his Red Sox debut. The 27-year-old Cuban appeared in 51 games (starting 49) for the Seattle Mariners over the last two seasons, posting a 3.97 ERA and 1.308 WHIP.
Elias, who came to Boston as part of the Carson Smith trade, is 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA and 2.25 WHIP in two starts with the PawSox this season.
Cuevas made one relief appearance during his brief stint with the big club. He worked 2 1/3 innings in Thursday’s 12-8 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, allowing two runs on three hits and walking two.
The Red Sox begin a three-game series against the Houston Astros on Friday night at Minute Maid Park.
