The New England Patriots reportedly have locked up the NFL’s best special teams player for another year.

Matthew Slater on Wednesday signed a one-year, $1.8 million contract extension with the Patriots that runs through next season, a source told ESPN’s Field Yates.

Slater, who signed a two-year extension in 2014, was set to become a free agent after this season.

Though he plays only sparingly at his listed position of wide receiver, Slater’s excellence on special teams has earned him selection to each of the last five Pro Bowls. The 30-year-old also is a three-time All-Pro, receiving the honor in 2011, 2012 and 2014.

The Patriots, who cut their roster to 75 players Tuesday, finish the preseason Thursday night against the New York Giants.
