The wait finally is over. The Chicago Cubs are going to the World Series.

The Cubs clinched their first World Series berth since 1945 on Saturday with a convincing 5-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series. Chicago won the best-of-seven-game series 4-2.

Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks continued his incredible 2016 season with a dominant effort in Game 6, as he shut out the Dodgers while allowing only two hits and striking out six in 7 1/3 innings.

Chicago got on the board early and often, as Kris Bryant hit an RBI single and Ben Zobrist added a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning. The Cubs extended their lead in the next frame on a Dexter Fowler RBI single. Willson Contreras and Anthony Rizzo then hit solo home runs in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively.

You had to like the Dodgers’ chances of forcing a Game 7 with their ace on the mound, but Clayton Kershaw struggled mightily. He allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts in only five innings.

Up next for the Cubs is a meeting with the Indians in the Fall Classic, which begins Tuesday in Cleveland.
