10:47 p.m. Winner of the Eberly Award for best save percentage goes to NU's Brad Thiessen while the Beanpot MVP goes to BU's Nick Bonino.
10:43 p.m. That's all folks. The Terriers pulled away with two goals in the final frame for the 5-2 win and city bragging rights.
10:38 p.m. The crowd is starting to thin out here at the Causeway barn as BU closes in on their 29th Beanpot title. The Huskies are putting up a great last effort but it's far too little and far too late. NU's fifth Beanpot title will have to wait until next year.
10:35 p.m. Colin Wilson will take his turn in the penalty box for tripping.
10:32 p.m. The Huskies are taking their frustration out in the form of cheap shots. Dennis McCauley just got a call for the interference with 4:28 to go. Let's see if BU can make them pay with a sixth goal.
10:30 p.m. When it rains it pours for Husky fans. BU just netted their fifth goal — a roof-job by Colin Wilson, assisted by Kevin Shattenkirk.
10:29 p.m. Down a man? So what says David Warsofsky. The BU defender just sniped one near-side to give the Terriers the 4-2 lead.
10:27 p.m. BU's Joe Pereira just took a bad slashing call to give the Huskies the man-advantage with about seven minutes to go.
10:25 p.m. The Huskies just killed off the BU power play and nearly had a couple chances of their own as the Terriers forced a few extra passes to and from the point.
10:21 p.m. Millan just stoned NU's Joe Vitale as the Huskies captain attempted to go five-hole on the BU goalie. Mike Hewkin just got called for interference to give the Terriers the power play with just under ten minutes to play.
10:19 p.m. Northeastern's Louis Liotti just buried BU's Kevin Shattenkirk in the Huskies zone — maybe this will fire up the NU attack.
10:16 p.m. The Terriers are getting closer and closer to netting their fourth of the night. A pair of penalties were just dished out to BU's Chris Higgins and NU's Steve Silva for some jabs after the whistle. Things are getting awfully chippy here in the final 12 minutes.
10:15 p.m. BU freshman Chris Connolly is everywhere. The Duluth, Minn. native nearly poked one past Thiessen as the NU keeper tried to cover up a shot from the point.
10:11 p.m. Northeastern has a 22-20 shot advantage but BU is still in control of the game.
10:08 p.m. BU just killed off that penalty with ease. NU had one good chance but the puck went sailing high above Millan's crossbar.
10:06 p.m. Another Huskies forward in the net; this time it's Ryan Ginand. BU killed off the first penalty and are now down just one man for roughly a minute.
10:03 p.m. A couple of scoring chances for the Huskies but the only thing that ended up in the net was forward Alex Tuckerman. BU's Kevin Shattenkirk just picked up a cross-checking penalty to give NU the two-man advantage for 45 seconds.
10:01 p.m. We're just about ready for the third period… A big shoutout to the NU and BU fans for bringing the noise and keeping it clean.
9:50 p.m. NU's Rob Rassey, who assisted on the Huskies second goal, chatted with Don Orsillo in between periods.
9:47 p.m. The Terriers hit up the locker room with a 3-2 lead and a 18-13 shot advantage but the Huskies have a man-advantage for 1:41 when the puck drops in the final frame.
9:44 p.m. The Huskies just caught a break as BU's Zach Cohen got nabbed for a trip with less than 20 seconds to go in the second period.
9:41 p.m. Steve Silva of NU tried the bank-shot off of Millan's back leg from behind the net and nearly succeeded but the puck bounced away and the Terriers were able to clear it out.
9:37 p.m. Thiessen is down, but not out. The NU keeper just got swarmed by a mad pack of Terriers but one of the Huskies defenders managed to clear the puck out. Tyler McNeely of Northeastern just got a ten minute and game misconduct for some post-whistle scrappiness.
9:35 p.m. Slap, ping, groan. BU's Brandon Yip's one-timer from the point just rang off the near post.
9:33 p.m. Rob Rassey of Northeastern will spend a couple minutes in the box for tripping. Rassey picked up an assist on McNeely's goal earlier this period.
9:26 p.m. The Terriers didn't let things stay tied for too long as Colin Wilson fed Jason Lawrence with a beatiful pass to give the Terriers the 3-2 lead. Lawrence buried it back-door for his 14th goal of the season while Wilson picked up his second assist of the evening. Also assisting on the play was Chris Higgins.
9:24 p.m. NU answered just as the BU penalty expired as sophomore Tyler McNeely buried a rebound into an open net. It's all tied up at two apiece.
9:22 p.m. BU's Vinny Saponari just got nabbed for interference, giving the Huskies the much-needed power play.
9:19 p.m. BU has really taken control of this game and now lead in shots 13-11. The Huskies are really having a tough time breaking the puck out.
9:16 p.m. Thiessen just stuffed BU's Chris Higgins at the doorstep of the crease as Driscoll's penalty ran out. Another bullet dodged by the BU bunch.
9:12 p.m. Northeastern will be a man down as Jim Driscoll got called for interference. This crowd is going to explode if the Terriers can pop another one.
9:09 p.m. That didnt take very long… Just 27 seconds into the second period, the Terriers' Nick Bonino scored on a towering rebound off the glass on the initial shot by Brandon Yip. BU takes the lead 2-1 on just their seventh shot of the night.
9:03 p.m. During the first intermission, Don Orsillo caught up with Colby Cohen who netted BU's goal.
8:53 p.m. After one period, NU and BU are knotted at one apiece. Northeastern holds the slight advantage in shots with a 10-6 lead. The Terriers are 1-for-3 on the power play while the Huskies are 1-for-4. BU holds the slight advantage in faceoffs won, 12-10.
8:49 p.m. With 25 ticks remaining in the first, Northeastern's Mike McLaughlin popped one past Millan to tie it up. McLaughlin crashed the net hard after Millan kicked aside Joe Vitale's initial shot. Wade MacLeod also got credited for an assist.
8:46 p.m. BU's Luke Popko just leveled NU's Jim Driscoll from behind and will be sent to the sin-bin with a boarding call with 1:10 to go in the first.
8:42 p.m. Scary moment here at the Garden as one of the refs took an attempted clear off the face. After getting up on his own power, the game resumes with three zebras.
8:38 p.m. Sure enough, the Terriers struck gold on the two-man advantage. Colby Cohen roofed a one-timer nearside from the point, beating Thiessen over his right shoulder. Assisting on the tally was Kevin Shattenkirk and Colin Wilson.
8:36 p.m. Northeastern is really digging themselves a hole. Already down a man, Louis Liotti will head to the box thanks to a crosscheck. The Terriers have over a minute of 5-on-3 hockey.
8:35 p.m. BU will go on the power play as NU's Mike Hewkin got called for a hold in the Huskies zone.
8:32 p.m. Thiessen hasn't seen much action as of late and might be tightening up. The 6-foot British Columbia native is trying to stay loose during the TV break, spanning the rink back and fourth from half-board to half-board.
8:30 p.m. Even after the power play, the Huskies are keeping the pressure on Millan and the BU defense. NU has a 7-2 advantage in shots and nearly missed taking the game's first lead when a 2-1 came crashing in on the BU netminder and took the net off its pegs.
8:28 p.m. BU has 23 seconds left to kill of the penalty. Gilroy just went down to block a screamer from the point and got a great cheer from the BU fans high above the ice.
8:23 p.m. Brandon Yip of BU will spend a couple of minutes in the box for a hit from behind. Yip also just turned it over at mid-ice that almost gave the Huskies a 1-0 advantage. A TV timeout will give NU plenty of time to draw something up.
8:22 p.m. Northeastern's David Strathman just ruined NU's power play with an interference call. We'll play a little four-on-four hockey for about a minute and a half.
8:21 p.m. NU will go on the power play as BU's John McCarthy got called for hooking.
8:19 p.m. BU's Chris Higgins just had a great scoring chance (and the Terriers' first shot of the night) but Thiessen kicked it aside with a quick left pad save.
8:17 p.m. Between the pipes for each team are NU's Brad Thiessen (19-6-2, 2.06 GAA) and BU's Kieran Millan (17-1-1, 1.63 GAA).
8:15 p.m. Through the first five minutes, NU has the only shot on net. The Huskies have kept the pressure on so far and the hits, as expected, have been aplenty.
8:05 p.m. BU's captain Matt Gilroy (five goals, 13 assists) just checked in with Don Orsillo ice level.
8:00 p.m. While Jim Craig interviewed with Bob Beers in the pregame show, I got the prediction from Walshy: Northeastern in overtime. It wouldn't be a Beanpot final without an extra frame, would it? Here come the starting lineups.
7:52 p.m. Moments ago, Northeastern's Ryan Ginand (18 goals, eight assists) from Milford, MA caught up with Don Orsillo ice level.
7:30 p.m. Both teams take the ice and the student sections couldn't be louder. The NU fans and the BU fans are located in the upper deck directly across from us in the NESN Garden studio but they sound as though they are right in our faces. This is going to be a loud one, folks.
7:16 p.m. Jim Craig, the goalie for the 1980 USA Olympic team that won the gold medal at Lake Placid will join Bob Beers and Brendan Walsh in the 7:30 p.m. NESN pregame show. Craig, who led BU to a National Championship in 1977, was inducted into the BU Hall of Fame in 1989.
7:09 p.m. No late heroics in this one as BC finishes of Harvard 4-3. BC outshot the Crimson 46-22. Tune into NESN at 7:30 p.m. to join Bob Beers, Brendan Walsh, Don Orsillo (ice-level), Tom Caron and Andy Brickley for pregame coverage of the 57th annual Beanpot final between Northeastern and Boston University.
7:04 p.m. BC jumped on a costly turnover in Harvard's zone and popped the go-ahead goal with 41 seconds to go. Benn Ferriero from Essex, MA beat Ryan Carroll to give the Eagles the 4-3 lead. Ted Donato's team will need a miracle to pull this one off.
6:52 p.m. Reports from the lower levels are that plenty of shirtless and rowdy BU fans are starting to pour in. I wonder if they took the T shirtless? Talk about an awkward ride into North Station.
6:51 p.m. BC might have just opened up the door for Harvard, as they just got called for too many men on the ice.
6:46 p.m. Being out-shot 40-21, it appears that Ted Donato's Crimson are sending a forward out early in their breakouts.
6:40 p.m. Through the first five minutes of the final frame, each team has managed just one shot apiece. The teams are playing dead-even.
6:23 p.m. Going to run down and grab some food while the NESN crew begins setting up the Garden Studio. Coverage begins at 7:30 p.m. with Bob Beers and Brendan Walsh.
6:18 p.m. There's the horn for the second intermission. The break couldn't have come at a better time for Harvard, as BC is starting to pick up the pace and control the game. At the second break, the Eagles lead in shots 36-19.
6:17 p.m. BC finally snuck another one past Carrol. Ben Smith one-timed an Edwin Shea feed to tie things up at three.
6:15 p.m. Add Joe Whitney to the list of Eagles who got stoned by Carroll in this period. Whitney walked in alone from the left side but couldn't elevate his shot over the sprawled out Crimson keeper.
6:13 p.m. BC's Jimmy Hayes just got robbed by Carroll as Hayes tried to bury a rebound top-shelf. The Eagles are clearly on a mission to prove to the Hub that last week's 6-1 crushing by Northeastern was a fluke.
6:12 p.m. Carroll just picked up his 26th and 27th saves of the night and there's still more than four minutes to play in the second frame.
6:10 p.m. Going to have to give props to the BC band — I haven't heard many bands that can play Snoop and Dre. Not to be outdone, Harvard's band belted out a good rendition of A-Ha's "Take on Me" earlier.
6:07 p.m. Ryan Carroll just stuffed BC's Andrew Orpik in front of the net for BC's first scoring chance in what seems forever.
6:03 p.m. Scratch that! Harvard just took the lead with a shorthanded tally by Nick Coskren. The Crimson lead it 3-2.
6:02 p.m. Bad time for Harvard to get a penality. Ian Tallett is in the sin-bin while he watched the Eagles start to heat up against his Crimson.
5:59 p.m. BC didn't take very long to respond has Brian Gibbons from Braintree, MA got one past Carroll to tie things up. It appeared to have got kicked around by a BC forward and Harvard defender before crawling past the goal line, but the score stands.
5:57 p.m. Harvard just took the 2-1 lead as Pier-Olivier Michaud snuck a rebound in to give the Crimson the 2-1 lead.
5:56 p.m. If I can steal a quote from Jack Edwards, Harvard's Michael Biega has "more moves than a monkey with 100 feet of rope!" The kid can certainly handle the puck.
5:55 p.m. BC is still leading in shots 22-13, but the Eagles have been unable to capitalize.
5:53 p.m. Carroll just came up with two back-to-back stops on BC, who is looking rather sloppy on the power play.
5:51 p.m. Harvard will be a man down after Chad Morin got caught cross-checking. The crowd is starting to fill in as the bands battle back and forth with Bon Jovi, Madonna and other classic 80's covers.
5:48 p.m. Period two is underway and the Eagles just got lucky as a Crimson shot beat Muse to the right and clanked off the post.
5:32 p.m. At the end of one, the score is knotted 1-1. BC has the slight advantage in shots with a 13-10 lead.
5:28 p.m. BC's Andrew Orpik just whiffed on what would have been a gimme. Carroll was way out of the net but the puck jumped over Orpik's stick at the last second, keeping the game knotted at one apiece.
5:26 p.m. The hitting has picked up here in the final minutes to play in the first. It wouldn't be a Hockey East battle without a couple yardsale-creating hits. Speaking of which, Harvard's Matt McCollem just got pinched for a boarding call, putting BC on the man advantage with just under three minutes to play in the first.
5:21 p.m. BC just answered with a one-timer from the point off the stick of Joe Whitney. Whitney's slapper beat a screened Crimson goalie Ryan Carroll top shelf.
5:16 p.m. Harvard just got the game's first goal. Defenseman Brian McCafferty sent one in on net and Pier-Olivier Michaud buried the rebound from the left side of Muse.
5:14 p.m. Muse just survived a shooting gallery including a nice left shoulder save on Michael Biega.
5:13 p.m. Harvard has a five on three advantage for the next 1:13. Now would be the best time to jump on the Eagles.
5:09 p.m. John Muse had a lot of problems in BC's 6-1 loss to Northeastern last week when it came to handling the puck behind and around his net. Muse almost just allowed one after a dump-in popped over his stick and right in front of the net. Nerves shouldn't be a factor for this sophomore as he played in plenty of big games last season for the defending National Champion Eagles.
5:05 p.m. BC is outshooting and outplaying the Crimson. The Eagles nearly snuck one past keeper Ryan Carroll who made a nice sprawling save on a one-timer.
4:34 p.m. The Eagles and the Crimson just finished up warm ups, as did the Harvard and BC bands. It's a good thing the bands are too or else no one would even think a game is about to go on. The house is expectedly empty at this point but as folks begin to dodge out of work early I expect this place to get a good crowd even for an early Monday evening.
