Wagner Seamlessly Works His Way Into Red Sox Bullpen Theo Epstein was looking for another lefty reliever to supplement Hideki Okajima. Even the GM was a bit surprised the Red Sox were able to get one the quality of Billy Wagner

There were questions about how effective Wagner would be less than a year removed from Tommy John surgery. He has silenced any critics with five scoreless innings between the Mets and Boston. Since joining the Red Sox, Wagner has pitched three innings, giving up one hit, one walk and striking out seven batters.

The only drawback is that Wagner can only be used every other day right now, because he is still coming back from elbow reconstruction. But with the Red Sox’ bullpen as stocked as it is, that is a drawback the team seems to be able to afford.

There aren’t any holes in the ‘pen. With Wagner, Takashi Saito and Jonathan Papelbon, the Red Sox have three proven closers in the mix, and they all have experience in pressure situations. Wagner knows Papelbon is the closer in Boston, but it’s nice knowing the Red Sox have other pitchers to turn to should the need arise.

Beyond his experience and success on the mound, Wagner appears to be a great addition to the clubhouse. He has already gotten into joking and some friendly smack-talking with his new teammates.

The Red Sox bullpen has been a force since day one in 2009, and Wagner’s addition just makes it even more impenetrable.
