BUFFALO, N.Y. — A person familiar with the request says the Bills have asked the New York Jets for permission to interview offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer for Buffalo's head coaching vacancy.

It's unclear when an interview might take place, the person told The Associated Press on Monday. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the Bills have not revealed their list of candidates to replace Dick Jauron, who was fired in November.

Schottenheimer is in his fourth season as the Jets coordinator.

Under NFL rules, the Jets can't deny permission, though they can decide when the interview can take place. Following a 24-14 win at Cincinnati, New York will travel to San Diego to play the Chargers in an AFC divisional playoff game on Sunday.
