The New York Yankees and pitcher Sergio Mitre avoided salary arbitration and agreed on a one-year deal worth $850,000.

Mitre served a 50-game suspension to begin last season after testing positive for a banned substance. The 28-year-old right returned to the Yankees last July. He posted a 6.79 ERA in 12 games and was left off of the team's postseason roster.

According to MLB.com, Mitre will compete with pitchers Chad Gaudin, Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain for the the fifth starter spot as well as the team's long relief slot. Mitre worked as both a starter and reliever for the Yankees last year.
