It appears as if Alan Embree's attempt at a comeback with the Red Sox has come to an end.

Embree told reporters he had been reassigned after the club's 5-4 loss to Baltimore on Friday night. He had just been recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket on Wednesday and did not appear in a game.

There had been no official word from the team.

The 40-year-old reliever told reporters he was disappointed to get the news but appreciated the Red Sox giving him a chance. He also indicated that he wants to still pitch somewhere in the major leagues but would be ready to accept this being the end of the road.

"I was hoping to have a chance to pitch and show them what I got," Embree said. "Hopefully someone out there saw me pitch in the minors."

Embree pitched with the Sox from 2002 to 2005, going 8-9 with four saves and a 4.69 ERA. He will forever be part of team lore for recording the last out of the 2004 ALCS win over the New York Yankees.

In 16 seasons with 10 teams, Embree is 39-45 with 25 saves and a 4.59 ERA.

The move would be made to accommodate Tim Wakefield's shift to the bullpen. Daisuke Matsuzaka will be activated for a start Saturday in Baltimore and take Wakefield's spot in the starting rotation.
