Kwame Brown, Jermaine O’Neal Possible Targets for Celtics

The Celtics are making it apparent that they're going to leave no stone unturned in their search for another big man to help ease the pain that will be created by the absence of center Kendrick Perkins.

Perkins — who tore two ligaments in his knee last month in Game 6 of the NBA Finals — is expected to miss five or six months and may not return until early 2011.

The Boston Globe reported Wednesday that the Celtics would have initial talks with former No. 1 overall pick Kwame Brown about the possibility of him joining the team to help fill in for the loss of Perkins.

Brown has been regarded as many as one of, if not the single biggest bust in NBA draft history. He was drafted first overall in the 2001 draft, but he has never developed into the big star many thought he would be.

Despite being such a bust, Brown is still a big man. He's 6-foot-11, 270 pounds, and while his career resume may not be very impressive at all, he would come with size that the Celtics desperately covet right now.

This comes just a day after reports surfaced that the Celtics were entertaining the thought of bringing in another former No. 1 overall pick — albeit with a much more impressive career than Brown — in Shaquille O'Neal.

"Nothing is out of the question, we need a big," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said in the article. "Shaq,
everybody is in play. No doubt. We haven’t done anything yet, but I
think everybody’s in play. I will wait [on talking about O’Neal]. If
the day comes that we sign him, then I will make more comments."

ESPN.com also reported on Wednesday that the Celtics are a possible destination for center Jermaine O'Neal. The 31-year old averaged 13.6 points and 6.9 rebounds last season.

He was quoted in the ESPN.com article as saying that the Celtics were one of the three teams he would be open to signing with, along with the Nuggets and Mavericks, saying "Those are my favorites. Those are teams that are going to compete [for a championship] next year."
