Last season, the Bruins had a little bit of a scoring problem.
Through four games this year, they seem to be facing an issue between the pipes, but it’s a good thing.
Tim Thomas bagged his third straight victory Tuesday night as he led the B’s to a 3-1 win over Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals. Tuukka Rask, who went 22-12-5 last season as the squad’s starting netminder for much of the season, hasn’t seen the ice since allowing four goals in the season-opening loss to the Coyotes in Prague. To make matters worse for Rask’s chances of seeing crease anytime soon, Thomas — who potted a shutout in his 2010-11 regular-season debut in Prague — has kicked aside 95-of-97 shots faced for a 0.67 GAA. It’s the best start of his career.
So who will get the start in the B’s home opener on Thursday night?
In Rask’s defense, Thomas was 10-4-0-2 in his career against the Caps heading into Tuesday night’s game, so based on his successful history against the D.C. club, there’s a chance a healthy Thomas was pegged to get this start sometime back in the preseason.
Additionally, The Tank was coming off a 32-save performance in Saturday’s 4-1 win over Ilya Kovalchuk and the dangerous Devils, so Claude Julien likely didn’t want to sit a hot goalie.
So what do you do for Thursday night’s home opener? Do you start the hot veteran and let the 23-year-old starter from last season sit for two straight weeks? Or do you give the veteran a rest and pencil in last year’s No. 1 keeper after an 11-day layoff?
