The AFC East, as expected, features three teams with legitimate playoff aspirations and a couple of the league’s elite. After beating the Ravens, the Patriots now own one of the league’s three one-loss marks, and their rivals, the Jets, own another. Their only loss, in fact, came in week one to Baltimore. Miami, though 3-2, has beaten tough teams Green Bay and Minnesota on the road and could certainly make a run.
The AFC South, though, may be even tougher. In the division, there’s not a single team with a losing record, and Houston, Indianapolis and Tennessee all sit at 4-2. Each team, however, is flawed. The Colts have no run defense, the Texans have no pass defense and the Titans offense sputters at times.
In the NFC, the South also features two of the conference’s better teams. Atlanta may have lost last week to Philadelphia, but they previously had looked like one of the league’s more complete teams, and New Orleans, of course, are the defending Super Bowl Champions. Even Tampa Bay has looked pretty good. Carolina, though, is among the league’s worst teams.
The usually competitive NFC East is again strong, but not in the way people expected. The Cowboys have been poor, but Philadelphia, New York and Washington are all off to solid starts. Other divisions too may be in the conversation. The NFC North was expected to feature two of the NFL’s elite in Minnesota and Green Bay, but neither has been as advertised. The AFC North does, however, have two of the best teams in Pittsburgh and Baltimore.
