Report: Jason Varitek, Johnny Damon Drawing Interest From Dodgers

When the Red Sox did not offer arbitration to team captain Jason Varitek, it was a sign that the Sox were perhaps willing to move forward without the veteran backstop. Now, it appears the Dodgers may be willing to facilitate that change.

According FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, Los Angeles is interested in Varitek, along with free-agent outfielder Johnny Damon.

Rosenthal noted that Varitek is hardly getting an exclusive look from the Dodgers, who are "in contact with virtually every free-agent catcher" with the future of Russell Martin currently up in the air.

Varitek, 38, has spent his entire major league career in a Red Sox uniform, suiting up for 1,420 games behind the plate. Though his numbers dipped significantly in 2009, he rebounded fairly well as a backup in 2010, hitting .232 with seven homers in just 39 games.

Damon, fresh off his 37th birthday, has never played in the National League, and doing so this late in his career probably doesn't make sense. He played 97 games last season as a DH in Detroit, with just 36 appearances in the outfield.
