The Red Sox activated outfielder Darnell McDonald from the disabled list prior to Tuesday night's meeting with the Tampa Bay Rays.

McDonald was placed on the DL on May 26 with a left quadriceps strain. He hit .345 (10-for-29) with two homers, three doubles, 11 RBIs and six runs scored in nine rehab games for Triple-A Pawtucket.

McDonald is just 3-for-21 (.143) with a home run in 19 games for Boston.

To make room on the active roster, the Red Sox optioned infielder Drew Sutton to Pawtucket. Sutton appeared at all four infield positions and in left field during his 12-game stint with the team. He hit .290 (9-for-31) with six doubles, five RBIs and five runs scored.

Without Sutton, the lone infielder on the bench will usually be either Jed Lowrie or Marco Scutaro, whomever is not in the starting lineup at shortstop.
