Red Sox Turn Triple Play for First Time Since 1994 in Second Game of Doubleheader Against Rays The Red Sox pulled off a rare feat on Tuesday night when they turned a 5-4-3 triple play in the fourth inning of their game with the Tampa Bay Rays.

With runners on first and second, Sean Rodriguez hit a ground ball to third base. Third baseman Jed Lowrie stepped on third base to force out B.J. Upton, Lowrie then threw to second to force out Casey Kotchman before Dustin Pedroia threw to first to complete the triple play.

The last triple play turned by the Red Sox was of the unassisted variety, turned by John Valentin on July 8, 1994. It was the 30th turned in team history.
