The Celtics are an old-school franchise, but there's a new-school feel around TD Garden nowadays. The C's have decided to promote their Twitter handle on the arena's parquet.

The move, orchestrated by the team's chief marketing officer, Shawn Sullivan, appears to be a first for the NBA. Sullivan reportedly took the idea to the league, which then gave him the green light.

Peter Stringer, the Celtics' director of interactive media, was asked why the team decided to promote its Twitter handle rather than its Facebook URL, and he explained that the handle is shorter, easier and cleaner. He also said that there's more room for growth on Twitter, as the team's Facebook page has 5.6 million fans, while its Twitter account has roughly 263,000 followers.

The C's join Mississippi State University in the Twitter movement, as the school's football team decided to paint "#HAILSTATE" in the end zone prior to its game against rival Ole Miss.
