Vote: Is Starting Pitching the Biggest Key to Red Sox' Second Half? The Red Sox exit the All-Star break at .500, sporting a 43-43 record at the unofficial midpoint of the season.

Considering the tumultuous year so far for the Sox, there's plenty of reasons to believe that the Sox can improve on their record and make a playoff push. However, there are many factors in play that will determine the extent of the team's success — or lack thereof.

The offense so far hasn't been such a big problem for the Sox, since they entered the break second in the league in runs scored and near the top of many other offensive categories, but the Sox attack could see some improvement. If Jacoby Ellsbury can stay healthy for the second half, he could be a catalyst for the Red Sox and a mainstay at the top of the lineup, solidifying the offense.

By the same token, Carl Crawford's impending return could be a huge boost to the team and a big key in any future success. After balancing a motley crew of outfielders during the year's first games, Bobby Valentine likely can't wait to get Crawford back to producing and wreaking havoc on the basepaths with Ellsbury.

Beyond the outfield improving, however, Adrian Gonzalez is not yet playing up to his usual lofty standards. Gonzo only has six home runs so far on the season, but if he finds his power stroke in the second half, watch out.

Of course, the pitching has been the question mark with this Red Sox team all year long. Andrew Bailey is nearing a return to the bullpen and could help strengthen what is already been a strong facet of Boston's club by returning to his closer's role. That would allow Alfredo Aceves to shine somewhere else, and can only help the team.

But it usually comes back to starting pitching, and that's where the Red Sox have been the most inconsistent this year. While newcomers like Felix Doubront have been pleasant surprises, the team will likely turn to Josh Beckett and Jon Lester to make a difference for the team down the stretch.
