Brock Holt, Mike Carp in Lineup Against Mariners As Red Sox Go for MLB-Best 22nd Series Win

Mike CarpWith Jose Iglesias shipped off to Detroit, Red Sox faithful were left wondering who would fill the vacancy at third base for the Sox. There was speculation that Will Middlebrooks or Xander Bogaerts would get the call-up from Pawtucket, but Brock Holt will take over at the hot corner for now.

Holt will look to do his part in helping the Sox win their 22nd series on the season, which can be clinched with a win on Wednesday. The third baseman will hit ninth in the order behind shortstop Stephen Drew.

Second baseman Dustin Pedroia will look to build upon his performance in Tuesday’s 8-2 win, during which he went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Pedroia had been held hitless in his previous 15 at-bats before Tuesday’s contest and had gone 3-for-39 since the All-Star break.

Mike Carp will get the start in left field and hit seventh for the Sox. Carp has not played since Sunday but has notched seven hits in his last 15 at-bats, boosting his batting average to .324 on the season.

John Lackey, who has struggled in his previous two starts, will take the mound against a Mariners team that has won 10 of their last 14 games. Lackey has given up nine runs on 19 hits over his last 12 2/3 innings, but he has had a rather successful season otherwise. His 3.19 ERA is second-lowest on the team behind Clay Buchholz.
