girlsOne lucky small business is about to have the publicity opportunity of a lifetime: their very own Super Bowl commercial.

Thanks to a competition held by Intuit, GoldieBlox beat out 15,000 other startups who signed up to win a 30-second ad during Super Bowl XLVIII, estimated to cost $4 million.

GoldieBlox creates interactive construction toys for girls that incorporate reading and building. The company’s mission is to encourage girls to take an interest in engineering (Founder and CEO, Debbie Sterling, received her degree in engineering from Stanford University).

In GoldieBlox’s contest submission, Sterling comments on the pink-ridden toy aisles for girls, saying, “we’re smart, we’re strong, we’re more than just a princess.”

She notes that just 11 percent of engineers in the U.S. are women and GoldieBlox seeks to pique girls’ interest in math and science from an early age. GoldieBlox is sold at many stores including Target and Toys R Us.

GoldieBlox was previously in the news when the company was involved in a legal battle with the Beastie Boys after an online GoldieBlox video featured their hit song, “Girls.”

Here’s a preview of GoldieBlox’s Super Bowl XLVIII commercial. It will appear in the third quarter of the game.
