NFL: AFC Championship-New England Patriots at Denver BroncosFOXBORO, Mass. — The New England Patriots are finally adding a ninth player to their practice squad.

The Patriots are signing linebacker Ja’Gared Davis after the second-year pro cleared waivers Thursday, a source familiar with the situation told NESN.com.

Davis, 24, was signed to the active roster on Oct. 4 when the Patriots waived wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins. Davis was cut Wednesday to make room for recently acquired linebacker Akeem Ayers.

Davis spent most of last season on the Patriots’ practice squad, playing in three games, including New England’s playoff matchups against the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos. Davis has one tackle in three games this season.

The Patriots made room on their practice squad last Thursday when they promoted running back Jonas Gray and guard Chris Barker. They have one spot remaining on the scout team, which likely will be filled by the player cut for defensive tackle Alan Branch, who was spotted in the Patriots’ locker room Thursday. Branch hadn’t officially signed with the Patriots as of 4 p.m. Thursday.
