John Wensink forever will be remembered for Dec. 1, 1977.
That’s the day Wensink, a beloved enforcer for the Boston Bruins, skated over to the Minnesota North Stars’ bench and challenged the entire team.
No one took the bait. Wensink, who had just fought Alex Pirus, immediately went down in Boston history, though. Him motioning to the North Stars’ bench remains one of the franchise’s most iconic images, as it has come to symbolize the toughness of both the team and the city.
ESPN on Wednesday released a new “30 for 30 Short” titled “Our Tough Guy.” The 10-minute documentary from Molly Schiot captures Wensink’s famous call-out through comments and anecdotes from the former tough guy, fans, his family and fellow NHL players.
