The Houston Texans’ dwindling playoff hopes now rest on the shoulders of Tom Savage.

Texans starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick broke his left leg in the second quarter of Houston’s game against the Indianapolis Colts and will miss the rest of the season, a source told NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport. Fitzpatrick suffered the injury during a scramble play and was carted off the field.

Savage, a fourth-round draft pick out of the University of Pittsburgh who had yet to take an NFL snap before Sunday, took over for the remainder of the game. He performed admirably, completing 10 of 19 passes for 127 yards, but threw an interception while failing to throw for a touchdown in Houston’s 17-10 loss.

The Colts clinched the AFC South title with the victory, while the Texans move to 7-7 on the season. They’ll have to win their final two games and get a significant amount of outside help in order to reach the playoffs.

Winning those games will be no small task, as Savage now is the only healthy quarterback on the Texans’ depth chart. Backup Ryan Mallett suffered a torn pectoral muscle in a Week 12 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals and also is out for the season.

To make matters worse, Savage also limped to the dressing room after taking a hit late in the game and will have an MRI, via the Houston Chronicle’s John McClain.

Hey, maybe J.J. Watt can play quarterback.
