The San Diego Chargers hold the No. 17 overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft, so it’s a little strange they’re reportedly working out top quarterback prospect Marcus Mariota.

Chargers head coach Mike McCoy, offensive coordinator Frank Reich, quarterbacks coach Nick Sirianni and front office members are traveling to Eugene, Ore., on Tuesday to work out Mariota, sources told Union-Tribune San Diego’s Michael Gehlken. Mariota is expected to be a top two pick in the draft, and the Chargers already have Philip Rivers under center.

Gehlken also reports the “sense around the league” is that trading up in the draft is a “real possibility” for the Chargers, and Rivers could be part of the deal.

Rivers wants to play out the final year of his contract with the Chargers and hit free agency next offseason, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported last month.

Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt was Rivers’ offensive coordinator in 2013 with the Chargers. Rivers, an Alabama native, had one of his best seasons in 2013 paired with Whisenhunt totaling 4,478 yards, a 69.5 completion percentage, 32 touchdowns, 11 interceptions and a 105.5 passer rating.
