John Farrell: ‘Conversation Has Started’ On Potential Rusney Castillo Call-Up

BOSTON — Red Sox manager John Farrell suggested Tuesday that a Rusney Castillo call-up might be coming sooner rather than later.

Farrell again addressed the outfield prospect Wednesday in a discussion of how Castillo would fit into the Red Sox’s outfield rotation if he is indeed promoted.

“I think you can make a guy fit if a guy’s forcing his was on the team with the way he’s performing,” Farrell said before the Red Sox hosted the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park, “and Rusney has swung the bat of late very well. We know he’s been away for a couple of days. There’s nothing imminent, but at the same time, that conversation has started.”

Castillo, who left Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday to attend the birth of his child, is expected to return to the PawSox’s lineup Thursday. Farrell declined to offer a timetable, however, for when the 27-year-old Cuban defector could make his return to the majors.

“There nothing that says after one game he’s coming up,” Farrell said.

Castillo appeared in 10 games for the Red Sox late last season after signing a seven-year, $72.5 million contract. He’s spent the first month-plus of this season in Pawtucket, compiling a .304/.355/.449 slash line with two home runs, nine RBIs and six stolen bases in 17 games.
