Liverpool started its summer transfer activity with a bang by securing the services of James Milner.
Milner agreed to join the Reds from Manchester City as a free agent on July 1, Liverpool announced on its website Thursday.
“The Reds have agreed personal terms with the England international, who will join the club on a free transfer on July 1 after his contract at the Etihad Stadium has expired,” the club said in a statement.
Milner, 29, is expected to add a wealth of experience, leadership and commitment to Liverpool’s cause. Some suggest manager Brendan Rodgers will consider Milner for the role of club captain next season.
Milner spent the last five seasons with Manchester City, helping it win two Premier League titles, one FA Cup and one Football League Cup during his time there. Milner previously played for Aston Villa, Newcastle and Leeds United.
Milner also has played 53 times for England’s national team. He has scored one goal in his international career.
Milner has earned widespread praise for the versatility he has shown throughout his career. While many expect him to play in central midfield — perhaps as a replacement for departing captain Steven Gerrard — he also could see playing time as a wide midfielder or as a wing-back.
Neither Milner nor Liverpool disclosed terms of his contract, but The Telegraph and The Mail report Milner will earn around £120,000 per week (£6.24 million/$9.6 million per year) at Liverpool. The figure would make Milner one of Liverpool’s highest-paid players.
Milner reportedly rejected a larger contract offer from Manchester City and interest from Champions League entrants Arsenal in favor of playing a leading and central role at Anfield.
