FOXBORO, Mass. — It seems unimaginable after the postseason performance Tom Brady had on the way to Super Bowl XLIX, but there was a time early last season when questions about the quarterback’s level of play were growing louder and louder.
Brady had failed to reach 200 passing yards twice during the Patriots’ rough 2-2 start, and his other stats weren’t much better. The doubts about his future seemingly were at an all-time high.
But then something funny happened — the Brady of yesteryear returned to the Patriots’ huddle and piloted them to a fourth Super Bowl championship.
While there was a noticeable dip to the start of the 2014 season, Brady ended up having one of the best seasons of his career, and that success is continuing in 2015. And, as coach Bill Belichick points out, that dependability shouldn’t come as a surprise.
“I think Tom’s been pretty consistent really through the years — his training, his preparation, his practice habits and routines, his games, he’s had a lot of consistency,” Belichick said in a conference call with Buffalo media Wednesday. “That’s the kind of person he is.
“… It’s not really any one thing that I would point to. I definitely wouldn’t say it’s any big difference between this year and last year or last year and some other year. I just don’t really see that. He’s very consistent for us.”
That consistency could help Brady play in the NFL for 10 more seasons, even if there is another rough patch like the start of 2014.
